The time has come for news to be a conversation, and not just a lecture. We want to integrate "citizen journalists" with professional journalists to share the online-media publishing space to benefit the community, both locally and farther afield. Citizens must have the opportunity to take an active, collaborative role in the journalistic process if we are to realize an effective journalism that appropriately informs a democracy. The intent of this participation is to provide wide-ranging, independent, accurate, reliable and relevant information that a robust democracy requires. Our tag line "OWN THE NEWS" is about giving the people a voice and the means to get that voice heard.
Our publication will, significantly, offer readers cutting-edge news in both English and Spanish about issues either inadequately covered or not covered at all by the mainstream and even some alternative media. Additionally, Owners will have the opportunity to post their own firsthand-account news stories, which can run the gamut from a local feel-good story to one of global importance.
How we operate
We do not accept advertising income. Due to this important decision, we can protect the integrity of the news; however, we have to raise income through subscriptions. If you believe as we do that owning the news is well worth the price of a subscription, subscribe today and participate in our community. Information about the subscription rates can be found on The Left Coast Independent Cooperative Journal website: tlcindependent.com.
Become an owner
Cooperatives are democratic organizations controlled by their owners, who actively participate in setting their policies and making decisions. Owners contribute equitably to, and democratically control, the capital of their cooperative.
Consumer cooperatives are very different from privately owned "discount clubs," which charge annual fees in exchange for a discount on purchases. The "club" is not owned or governed by the "members" and the profits of the business go to the investors, not to the members.
At The Left Coast Independent Cooperative, instead of a fee, there is a purchase of shares (or paying into an equity investment). These investments allow the cooperative to purchase equipment, make improvements, finance operations and minimize debts. The owners own the business and the profits belong to the community.
TLC Independent is entirely funded by its Owners and Subscribers. By removing advertising revenue from the equation, our journalists are able to deliver clean information without compromising to the conflict of interest that too often exists between content and advertiser interests.
"OWN THE NEWS" is more than a slogan; TLC Independent views individual ownership of the news as the only viable method for giving clean information back to We the People.
